Meet the intern!

Howdy! I’m the new intern up to bat – Lin Saunders!

I’m studying at the Research Master ‘Arts, Literature and Media’ here at Leiden right now, and I’ve loved both games and history ever since I saw some digital toy soldiers on my screen in Age of Mythology. Previously I’ve studied within historical game studies, and have a great interest in memory and imagination – which are  vitally tied *to* history, but are their own beasts. This Summer I’ll be working with VALUE to build some new partnerships with other folks thinking about these themes – but more important for this blog is what I’ll be writing.

I’m going to take a bit of a different tack from other writers who’ve contributed here, because I’m less going to talk about history in games so much as a strange digital phenomenon, which tangles both games, history, and history games in its web. That phenomenon is slop – a recent, popular way to trash things that’s most visibly used for AI – yet it’s also used all over the place for all sorts of stuff, and I have this sneaking suspicion that you can find ‘slop’ slitherin’ under the floorboards of most of the world right now. Why? Well, you’ll need to read my next post to find out!

Now, for a little more about me: I love scholarship, there’s nothing quite as meaningful to me as learning, so I feel real blessed to have had this opportunity to put so much of my time and energy towards it. The works of history, art, philosophy, natural science are incredibly liberating, but they’re also gated to way too many people. More than anything I care about making learning more accessible to people of all backgrounds and getting the wealth of knowledge that’s built up in academia out of this darn labyrinth institution – because knowledge is power, and right now the people in power are pretty nasty folks. In the long run, I’m looking for opportunities to connect people with info that helps em!

If you’re interested in working with me on something, or just want to connect, you can reach me here:

Else, I’ll see you in the ‘slop’ pit!
